Chapter 10

Our first night in Tullia was long and arduous.

The darkness was complete and all-consuming even with the green-tinted light of the moon, and the sounds of the monsters prowling outside were ever-present.

It grew louder and louder with each hour that passed, and the sounds grew increasingly more violent. There were roars and screeches, as well as fighting that clearly ended in some creature’s horrible death.

But the worst part was the sounds of panting and snuffling right outside the windows on the first floor as I patrolled while the women were asleep.

I couldn’t see anything thanks to the barricades of tables and couches, but I could hear it all the same, and it made a shiver roll down my spine.

At one point, I even heard scratching at one of the windows.

Suddenly, the precautions we’d taken didn’t feel like nearly enough. We needed to do more, and soon, to make sure we were fully protected. The thought of using some of the mesh Nora had mentioned crossed my mind, and the need for a moat felt more pressing than ever.

I had no idea what these monsters were, but the more of them there were and the longer they investigated the building, the more likely they’d find a way in. We needed to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, and right now, the threat of wild animals was leading the pack.

By the time Asha came down to relieve me by the blinding light of her phone, I felt half delirious with the need for sleep. I’d been up for pushing twenty hours, thanks to my early start time on campus the day before.

“Go to bed, Isaac,” she whispered. “You look like you’re about to pass out.”

“I am,” I said. “Thank you for noticing. Is everyone okay up there?”

“Yeah,” she assured me. “They’re all out. No one even woke up when my alarm went off.”

“Good,” I said. “Thank you for taking this shift, I was worried I’d need to be up all night.”

“We wouldn’t do that to you,” she assured me. “You’re keeping us alive, man. We’re a team. We aren’t going to make you do everything. Olivia might, but she actually has an excuse right now.”

I snorted out a tired laugh. “Well, thank you anyway. I appreciate it. Here, I really hope you won’t need to use this… but just in case.”

I slung the Kimber off my shoulder and passed it over to Asha, who took it from me cautiously.

“Have you ever used a gun?” I asked.

“Not unless we’re counting paintball guns,” she said as she eyed the weapon cautiously.

In the darkness, her cool brown skin seemed even darker, and the whites of her eyes stood out in sharp, alarmed contrast as she stared at the gun.

“It’s not too hard,” I said. “Here are the basics.”

I quickly ran through how to load the rifle, load a bullet into the chamber, and the most important safety rule of firearms. Only aim at something you’re willing to destroy.

Asha nodded along as I spoke, and I really hoped it was an actual nod of understanding and not just nodding to placate me.
